Battery Degradation-Aware Current Derating: An Effective Method to Prolong Lifetime and Ease Thermal Management

To ensure the safe and stable operation of lithium-ion batteries in battery energy storage systems (BESS), power/current is de-rated to prevent from going outside operating range. Most derating strategies use static limits for current, voltage, temperature state-of-charge, do not account complexity degradation. Progress has been made with models lithium plating fast charging. However, this a partial solution, does consider other degradation mechanisms, still requires complex optimization work, limiting widespread adoption. In calendar cycle model analysed offline predetermine rates. The results are integrated into current-derating strategy.
